Odoo Inventory Adds CipherLab UHF RFID Scanner Support That Works Straight From a Web Browser

Odoo expands its RFID hardware compatibility to include CipherLab RS36 and RS38 series UHF scanners, with a setup that bypasses the Android app entirely and works through the Barcode Progressive Web App or any mobile browser.

RFID adoption in warehouse operations has been steadily climbing, but the hardware landscape for ERP-integrated scanners has remained frustratingly narrow. If your warehouse ran Odoo, you had one option for RFID: Zebra. The TC53e-RFID series and the RFD90/RFD40 sleds worked, but Zebra’s enterprise pricing meant smaller operations often couldn’t justify the investment.

That limitation just loosened. Odoo’s Inventory module now officially supports CipherLab’s RS36 and RS38 series UHF RFID scanners — rugged Android devices with integrated UHF readers that sit at a materially different price point than the Zebra lineup. And there’s a setup detail that matters more than the hardware choice itself: CipherLab scanners work with Odoo through a web browser. No Android app installation required.

The Browser-First Approach Changes the Deployment Math

This is the detail that warehouse IT teams will care about most. Zebra’s RFID integration with Odoo routes through the dedicated Odoo Android application, which means managing app deployments, updates, and device provisioning through an MDM solution or manual installs. CipherLab takes a different path entirely.

The CipherLab scanners pipe their tag reads through a companion app called Multi-Tag Output, which formats the RFID data and sends it to whatever application has focus on the device. That application can be the Odoo Barcode Progressive Web App or simply Chrome pointed at the Odoo instance. The scanner reads a tag, the Multi-Tag Output app formats the data with a semicolon delimiter, and the browser receives it as keyboard input.

For operations that already use the Barcode PWA for manual scanning, adding RFID capability doesn’t require changing the software stack at all. Same interface, same workflows, different input method. That’s a meaningful reduction in deployment complexity, especially for warehouses scaling from barcode scanning to RFID without wanting to retrain the floor team on a different app.

Setting Up the Hardware

The configuration process is straightforward but has a few steps that are easy to miss. First, the CipherLab device’s firmware needs to be current — the Multi-Tag Output app depends on recent firmware features that older versions may not expose.

The Multi-Tag Output APK itself comes from CipherLab or from the device supplier, not from the Play Store. Transfer it to the device via USB, Bluetooth, or direct browser download and install it manually. After installation, the app needs two Android permission adjustments that aren’t obvious from the app’s own settings.

First, navigate to the Android system settings, find Multi-Tag Output under Apps, open the vertical ellipsis menu, and enable “Allow restricted settings.” Second, open the app, go to the Accessibility section in the system settings it redirects to, and enable “Use Multi-Tag Output.” Without both of these, the scanner reads tags but the data doesn’t reach the browser.

The final configuration step sets the end character to a semicolon in the Multi-Tag Output settings. This delimiter tells Odoo where one tag read ends and the next begins when scanning multiple items in rapid succession — critical for inventory counts where speed matters.

Three Hardware Families, One Workflow

With CipherLab joining the supported hardware list, Odoo’s RFID ecosystem now covers three device families: CipherLab UHF RFID (RS36 and RS38 series), Zebra mobile computers (TC53e-RFID), and Zebra RFID sleds (RFD90XX and RFD40XX series that attach to existing Zebra handhelds).

The Zebra options remain the choice for operations that are already standardized on Zebra hardware or need the specific form factors those devices offer. The CipherLab option opens the door for warehouses that want RFID capability without committing to Zebra’s ecosystem — or that simply need a second vendor option for procurement flexibility.

From Odoo’s perspective, the workflow is identical regardless of hardware. Scan tags, see inventory updates, process receipts and transfers. The hardware abstraction happens at the device level, not in the ERP, which is exactly how it should work.

What This Means for Mid-Market Warehouses

RFID has been a technology where the integration cost often exceeded the hardware cost. Getting tags read by a device was the easy part; getting that data cleanly into the ERP without middleware, custom scripts, or expensive integration partners was the expensive part.

CipherLab support in Odoo lowers both sides of that equation. The hardware is more accessible than Zebra for budget-conscious operations, and the browser-based integration eliminates the middleware layer entirely.
